This past weekend I went to the Festival of Colors, which is held at the Hindu Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. It is in part to celebrate the coming of spring, but it also reaches back into their religion. I am unsure of the whole story and meaning, but from what I understand Prahlada (I still can’t figure out who this guy was, I even Wikipedia-ed him) was carried into a fire by a deamoness. The deamoness died, but Prahlada survived. Bonfires are usually lit the day before this festival in commemoration of this. The deamoness’s name was Holika, so that is where they get the name of the festival: Holi.

The color part of the festival comes from Lord Kirshna, who had apparently complained to his mother about his dark skin complexion compared with Radha’s fair complexion. Radha and Kirshna were childhood friends and lovers. Because of his complaint, Kirshna’s mother applied color to Radha’s face. Hence the color throwing.

I think it may get a little excessive here in at the Utah Hindu temple, but I guess they love us Mormons invading because they made two events this years to accommodate everyone.

I went to the later one, and it apparently had more people. Check it out:

This is me and some friends before (and notice the cloud of color in the background…BEFORE everyone threw up colors).

Yeah, still before…

My genius friend Jonathon brought doctor’s masks. Trust me. They were needed when the colors went up.

Then the countdown began for everyone to throw their colors in their air

This is what I saw after the 1…or should I say what I didn’t see. I couldn’t even see the people standing right next to me! It was so crazy! I felt completely alone, but there were hundreds of people around me.

A few seconds though, and I started to see again. Notice the guy in this <---- picture. I have no idea who that is. And then more random people here ---->.

Color it up.

love them. so much.

from google images

everytime i listen to them i melt. just like a popsicle on the fourth of july.

read these lyrics and tell me you don’t melt:

I need you here tonight just like the ocean needs the waves.

I’ve figured out, that what you do makes me feel like I’m floating on air.

You don’t understand how helpless I can get, since that day that we met, oh can you feel it yet? It’s never been more perfect being alive. I’ve never been so satisfied.

So be here by my side and watch the starts. They’re ours.

Remembering everything about my world and when you came. Wondering, the change you’d bring means nothing else would be the same. Did you know what you were doing, did you know? Did you know how you would move me, well, I don’t really think so.

So when you say forever, can’t you see…you’ve already captured me.

And these are just a few lines from a few of Mae's sappy love songs. There are more love songs and they also have so much more amazing music about life and what we're doing about it. Listen to them. You're missing out if you don't.

school teacher.

I can’t wait. Just another year and I will have my very own classroom. Call me nerdy, but while sitting here in the library reading my textbook about teaching literacy to children, I am getting so excited. All these wonderful ideas of how to incorporate reading and writing; things such as having the children each get a chance to practice reading a story on their own at home and then read it to the class, or having a card making station in the room where they can write and make any kind of card, or reading a story to the class and having them act out a scene. Oh! Or having the children be “detectives” and decode the mysteries of a food label. High fructose corn syrup has a disguised name! Its really sugar! I’m so excited! It’s the same kind of excited feeling I get when I plan a fun vacation. But this is no vacation, this will be my job.

I guess I picked the right major.

will it happen?

Remember a few posts ago how I said I was going to Paris? Yeah. Didn't happen. Pretty much everyone bailed out. It was sad. So we decided to change the trip to Atlanta--less time and more affordable. Yeah. That also didn't happen. I still have 4 good buddy passes and I want to go on a trip. We are now considering Cancun. So what are your bets? Will it happen? I'm being very doubtful these days...

San Diego is also a possibility. One of these better work. If not, who is up for a trip? The buddy passes only last until May 18...

My Brother Bleeds Blue

I should have blogged about this right when it happened. In spite of my fault, I still have great news!

My little brother, Ben, got accepted in to BYU!

He's such a stud!

Look how cute he is!

He watches out for me.
(p.s. don't worry folks, thats just ibc.)

The three rockin' Haskins that will be at BYU in the fall.
Can't you tell we're in college??

So, needless to say, I am really excited for him to come out. So, in the words of the elder brother Todd, Come-on Benny-Boy! Let's go Benny-Boy!
